And capping off TM2 with one of the game's stronger cars. Spectre is a menace and I have no idea why they buffed him. His special zigs and zags a little less to make it more accurate, but still ultimately works the same way. Still usually avoided by sitting still, which still leaves you vulnerable. He's also a bit faster relative to the other cars in the game. This combined with the "through the walls" attribute of his special means his zoning game is incredible. The increased verticality of the levels have also contributed to Spectre's increase of power and safety. The high ground is generally more powerful for him than anyone else, or at least easier to abuse.
However what holds him back is the good ol' freeze ram meta. Spectre's low-damage special can help him land freezes, both through the stagger it inflicts upon hit, as well as it being a psuedo-freeze missile itself, but it's not the greatest at capitalizing on a freeze missile hit. Due to his small size, his rams aren't very powerful, except against Grimm and Twister, and he gets rammed hard by every other car in the game. He's great at setting up and avoiding freezes, but not necessarily good at capitalizing on landing a freeze, though this can be supplemented with powerful pickups like power missiles, napalms, and remote bombs.
This car is a nuisance, and very easy to be annoying with due to how hard he is to catch, and how far he can be effective from while being safe, making his opponents die a slow death. But either way, he's not really my preferred style. However, this Spectre in particular holds a special place in my heart. I was introduced to Twisted Metal by my dad, and this is his favorite car. Hell, my earliest life memory is watching him play this game as Spectre. It's like to me, this is his car. Love you, dad.
Played on Medium difficulty, because while you can save and reload your game in this version, reloading a file doesn't remember your inventory, and I didn't feel like pistol starting every level. Trying to go deathless but not restarting if I do die. Not getting a Game Over is fine here. Also using custom car skins, and custom graphics for some levels. Also using a fix for the shield (PC version has shield last 10 seconds as opposed to PS1's 4-5 second shield) as well as a modified version of Antarctica where the chunks don't fall. These are options in the TM2 launcher and can be toggled.
Before we get to Twisted Metal 3, we're going to be taking a detour. My intent with this series was to play every version of every Twisted Metal in order of release, in order of car select. The first four entries are done. However, I believe that both Critical Depth and Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012 are very important to the evolution of Twisted Metal. They have Twisted Metal's DNA in them, which makes sense seeing as they were developed by SingleTrac. As such, I've decided to include both of them in this series. And both of them released before Twisted Metal 3. So before we get to 989 Studios' takes on Twisted Metal, I hope you'll join me as we plunge all the way down to Critical Depth, and then go on a little getaway Rogue Trip.
