Gyeongju Daereungwon Royal Tombs are a cluster of royal tombs from the Silla Dynasty, located in Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, they contain over 23 tombs containing the burial sites of Silla kings and royal family members from the 5th and 6th centuries. Covering a total area of ​​approximately 1,200 square meters, they vividly demonstrate Silla's royal authority, social structure, and burial culture.

Daereungwon Royal Tombs are centered around major tombs such as Hwangnamdaechong and Cheonmachong Tomb. The walking trails are popular for their vibrant cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage. Admission is free and the tomb is open daily from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Its well-equipped facilities for the disabled and elderly make it an ideal family destination.

Cheonmachong Tomb (Tomb No. 155) within Daereungwon Royal Tomb Complex is a royal stone mound wooden chamber tomb dating from the late 5th to early 6th century, dating back to the reign of King Maripgan. It measures 12.7 meters in diameter and 6 meters in height. A large-scale excavation by the Gyeongju Historic Sites Excavation Team in 1973 unearthed over 11,500 artifacts, including the Silla Gold Crown (National Treasure No. 188), the first to be discovered after liberation, which shocked the world. Measuring 32.5 cm in height and weighing 1,262 grams, the crown features three branch-shaped ornaments inlaid with gold plates and jewels, showcasing the pinnacle of Silla metalwork.

The particularly famous "Cheonmado" (Heavenly Horse Painting), a horse armor painted on birch bark, vividly depicts a winged celestial horse soaring through the sky. It symbolizes the fusion of Silla's astronomical worldview, Buddhist influence, and Central Asian nomadic culture, and has been designated National Treasure No. 191. Other relics unearthed include a gold turban (purse-shaped ornament), a silver belt, glass cups, an iron sword, and a bronze mirror, all of which are currently on display at the Gyeongju National Museum. While a wooden coffin and traces of a body were discovered during the excavation, the identity of the occupant remains unknown, and many believe it was the tomb of a queen or prince.

The restored interior of Cheonmachong Tomb is open for viewing. An admission fee of 3,000 won for adults (2,000 won for youth and military personnel, 1,000 won for children) allows visitors to view the basement and the arrangement of artifacts. A full tour of Daereungwon takes 1-2 hours and is recommended as a historical tour in conjunction with nearby Bulguksa Temple or Seokguram Grotto. This is more than just a tomb; it's a time travel destination that relives the glory and art of Silla 1,500 years ago.
