I took apart a digital piano, and used mechanical keyboard switches and caps in place of the piano's hammers. It is a viable option for performing live music, but it has some quirks that need ironed out. I have more info about this on my website:

On the mech keyboard side, it has kaihl box reds and dsa keycaps.
On the midi side, it used to be an m-audio keystation pro.
It still works fine just the way it was, BUT velocity functionality has been lost. I needed to solder BOTH diodes together (from each key), so it only sends velocity 127.
