Overexplaining is often a trauma response.
It can come from growing up unseen, unheard, or left alone too long-like I was, sent across the world from South America to live with relatives in Holland as a child.
That absence imprints itself into the nervous system.
As adults, it often shows up as anxious attachment.
So when it's time to set a boundary or say "no," that younger part of us panics.
We soften our truth. We overexplain. We try to make others feel okay-so we don't feel abandoned.
And afterward, we wonder, Why did I do that?
That's not a quirk. That's the body remembering when being misunderstood felt dangerous.
Start by listening inward.
Notice where it lives-maybe in your chest, your throat.
Recall that younger version of you and offer what they never got:
"I see you. You're safe now. I've got you."
Write. Reflect. Or join one of our therapist-led groups and do this work gently, without shame.
Led by Alistair Moes - the wise disruptor who turns lived grit into grounded, heart-led leadership.
Real talk. Real tools. Real growth.
Upcoming trauma-informed groups:
• April 30 – Men's Group
• June 4 – Women's Group
1-on-1 sessions also available, online or in downtown Vancouver.
