An ostomy skin barrier, also known as an ostomy wafer, is a piece of medical equipment with a hole that fits around the stoma to protect it from stoma output. The ostomy wafer plays the most important role in the pouching system as it holds the ostomy pouch in place and protects the sensitive peristomal skin. Furthermore, it provides a level pouching surface. In a 2-piece system, the wafer is separate from the pouch, whereas they are combined in a 1-piece system. An ostomy barrier usually lasts roughly a week before needing to be changed.
