It is arguable that the North of England has long been the country’s engine, with a rich history of invention, innovation, and creativity. Yet despite this pivotal role, the fortunes of northerners have never been further apart from their southern counterparts.
How do we define and characterise de-industrialisation in Northern England? What are its key historical and economic drivers, and where’s all the money gone? What could our industrial heritage look like for future generations?
In this episode, host Alison Dunn is joined by Liz Mayes, Jo Curry and Rob Charlton.
Liz Mayes led the £7.1m National Lottery Heritage Fund Bid and restoration works at The Mining Institute, becoming Chief Executive of The Common Room in 2019. She is also a trustee of Tyne & Wear Building Preservation Trust.
Former solicitor Jo Curry runs the Sir James Knott Trust, enabling grants across the North East. She is Vice Chair of Virgin Money Foundation and previously worked for VONNE, Changing Lives and Citizens Advice.
Rob Charlton, CEO with 25+ years in the built environment sector and a chartered architect, believes in the transformative power of design to create places with lasting impact.
