Captain Edwin H. Cooper, U.S. Signal Corps photographic officer, taking motion pictures in a Liberty plane, 18 October 1918. The plane crashed shortly after take-off but no one was hurt. Additional footage shot by Cooper on October 21, 1918, showing a staged battle between American ace Eddie Rickenbacker and a captured German plane, including close-ups of Cooper's pilot Jimmy Meissner.
Copied from the stock collection of Critical Past and the Imperial War Museum, "Pictorial History of the World War, No. 4". Record number IWM 501-4. Part of these films has also been found at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., Signal Corps Collection, record number 111-H-1400.
