In conjunction with the exhibition Frank S. Matsura: Portraits From the Borderland, this two-part conversation on November 1, 2025, focused on identity and representation of Indigenous and Japanese American cultures in the media. The program took place at the 220 PDX building in Portland's historic Japantown and was organized by the Japanese American Museum of Oregon.
The event started off with a panel discussion with curator Michael Holloman, Dr. Satsuki Ina, and Hanako Wakatsuki-Chong, moderated by Dr. Melanie Fillmore. There was an additional reflection session afterward that was not recorded.
Melanie Fillmore is urban mixed Hunkpapa, Lakota of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of North and South Dakota and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma.
Michael Holloman is a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation and is an Associate Professor at Washington State University.
Dr. Satsuki Ina is a licensed psychotherapist specializing in community trauma, author, and co-founder of Tsuru for Solidarity.
Hanako Wakatsuki-Chong is the Executive Director of the Japanese American Museum of Oregon
