Hi there. In this video I'm going to show you how you can finish your jewelry that's made with ribbon, using a finding called ribbon ends.
In jewelry making these days, it's often popular to finish the jewelry with something other than just beads, string, wire, or cords, or chains. Sometimes, it's finished with fibers such as ribbons, like this silk ribbon here, or just a craft ribbon here. But how do you finish the ends neatly? You can just nod it, but what if you want to have a nice closure in a clasp? That's where these findings come in, they're called ribbon ends. I only have two examples here, but they all are pretty much the same. It's just a u-shaped piece of two flat pieces. Often the edges have some kind of grip, these ones are just folding in, but on this one you can see the serrated teeth for gripping on to the ribbon.
Then there's a loop on the other end, and that's to attach your findings; a clasp, or a chain, or a jump ring, or whatever you need. And they all work the same way. You simply insert your ribbon into the finding, and you'll find that these come in lots of different widths to accommodate your width of ribbon. You want to match the width of your ribbon to the width of your finding, and then you can use your fingers to squeeze a little bit, but really the best tool for the job is a pair of nylon-jaw pliers. The nylon-jaws are nice, because they won't mar your finding. You just hold it with the nylon-jaw pliers gently, we don't want to squeeze it quite yet, pop your ribbon in there, and then squeeze.
It's not a bad idea, before you start, to use a tooth pick, and just apply a little bit of glue on the inside to both sides. This will just insure that you have a good grip, and then you pit your ribbon in there. Actually, a great tool, if you don't have nylon-jaw pliers, there's flat-nose pliers. Hold on to it, center your ribbon in there, and then squeeze. And now you have a nicely finished ribbon end, and then you can attach a cord or a clasp to this, and have a very neat finish to your jewelry. Now, you can see that they come in different finishes, like this one's a bit decorative with the basket weave pattern, and they come plain. They come in any color that you want to match any jewelry findings you might have. Gold, antique-gold like this one, silver. You can find them in just about anything you need.
So that's how you create nice, neat finishes on jewelry made with ribbon.
