Israel Crosby (January 19, 1919 – August 11, 1962) was one of the most important bassists to emerge in jazz before the advent of Jimmy Blanton. Although his playing was widely acclaimed through his many recordings with the Ahmad Jamal trio, there was much more to his story.
Drummer Vernel Fournier (July 30, 1928 – November 4, 2000) worked in many settings with Crosby besides their famous years with Jamal, and here he talks at length about their friendship.
The interview was recorded on 3.3.85 as a segment of an extended feature on Crosby's music that I was doing during my long stint as a host on WKCR-FM.
