Indian sadhus converge at Sadhugram in Tapovan : Nashik Kumbh

Описание: Hindu sadhus throng Sadhugram in Tapovan, the temporary abode of several sadhus, has turned saffron.

Sadhus and sants can be seen clad in shades of saffron to yellow, and some in white, in a hurry to set up their shivir (camp) and prepare for the month of Parva.

The sadhugram, spread over 335 acres of land in Tapovan and stretching across the Aurangabad road, is divided into four broad sectors with 12 sub-sectors. There are 1,700 plots with an area of about 300sqmt each.

The toughest task while building the sadhugram was the hardening and flattening of ground, as the cluster stands on agricultural land. "The soil here is black cotton and very soft. With rainwater, muddy patches and puddles are formed. Also, the Kumbh Mela takes place during the monsoon, so we had to take extra care," said UD More, chief co-ordinator, Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC).

The plot was hardened with layers of grill, pressed hard together. In places, the land had to be flattened to withstand the load of vehicles, temporary construction and a large number of people. The plots were created on this readied land, keeping space for roads and service roads. The service roads are used by utility services — garbage vans, accommodate drainage systems, water supply and electricity.

Every plot has four toilets and a big bathroom with five taps. During the last Kumbh Mela, the bathrooms were open, but this time care has been taken to cover them completely. The whole of sadhugram has more than 9,000 toilet blocks. These are connected to sewage drain pipes and to chambers, which are connected to the main sewage line that goes to the sewage treatment plant.

"The water provided is purified and periodic testing is also conducted," said More.

For waste disposal, every plot has been provided with bins and ghanta gadis. Around 1,500 sweepers keep sadhugram, Ramkund, ghats and the river banks clean round the clock. For electricity, the MSDCL has created a sub station.

A 60-bed hospital has been created with 24x7 medical services. Four primary health centres with three beds for emergency cases have also been set up.

Grocery shops, food stalls, milk centres, vegetable and fruit stalls, and medicine shops are also present. Ration shops have been opened and every akhada and khalsa has been given cards for using the rationing service.

Rice, grain, sugar and wheat are provided at discounted prices. LPG cylinders are also being provided.

"This is a temporary town and micro-planning has been used to raise it. Basic infrastructure of good quality has been provided to make the stay of sadhus during the Kumbh Mela comfortable," said More.
