A new working paper by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister shows an alarming rise in tobacco consumption across India. The study finds that urban tobacco-using households increased by 60 percent over the past decade, while gutka consumption in rural India surged by more than 500 percent. Experts warn that growing use of smokeless tobacco could worsen India’s burden of oral cancer, lung disease and cardiovascular conditions.
