Hi everyone! my name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian.
In today's video I am talking about dog food allergies. Food allergies in dogs can be caused by the proteins they eat. When a dog has a food allergy they may have really itchy skin. Food allergies in dogs are very common. Different proteins can cause food allergies in different dogs. The goal is to figure out which protein is causing the allergy.
I cover how I as a veterinarian complete a food trial. The goal of a dog food trial is to keep things simple. I talk through two different dog food trials. The first option is to try a novel protein. A novel protein is a new protein. This is a protein that the dog with the food allergy has not been exposed to yet. The second option is to try a hydrolyzed food. A hydrolyzed food has protein that is cut into very small amino acid chains, and this prevents the protein from causing a food allergy.
Having your dog with a food allergy eat a novel protein or hydrolyzed protein can help resolve itchy skin from a food allergy. Once changing a dog's food, it will not change their itchy skin overnight. It may take weeks or months to see improvement in a dog with a food allergy.
I hope you guys like the video.
