Reciprocating EC Engine,
1) Steam Engine
2) Stirling Engine
Reciprocating engines are a type of heat engine that operates by using a piston to compress and expand a working fluid (usually a gas) to convert thermal energy into mechanical work. Both steam engines and Stirling engines are examples of reciprocating engines, but they operate on different principles. Here's a brief overview of each:
1) Steam Engine:
👉 Steam engines use water as their working fluid, which is heated to produce steam. The steam is then directed into a cylinder where it pushes a piston. As the steam expands and cools, it condenses back into water, creating a vacuum that helps move the piston in the opposite direction.
👉 Steam engines played a significant role in the Industrial Revolution and were commonly used in various applications, including locomotives, factories, and ships.
👉 There are two main types of steam engines: the external combustion engine (where combustion occurs outside the cylinder) and the internal combustion engine (where combustion occurs inside the cylinder). The latter type is commonly used in steam locomotives.
2) Stirling Engine:
👉 Stirling engines operate on the Stirling cycle, a thermodynamic cycle that involves the cyclic compression and expansion of a gas at different temperature levels.
👉 Unlike steam engines, Stirling engines do not require water and can use various gases, such as air or helium, as their working fluid. The engine typically has two cylinders with a heat exchanger (regenerator) between them.
👉 Stirling engines are known for their high efficiency and low emissions because they can operate on temperature differentials. They are often used in applications where a constant heat source is available, such as in some solar power systems and small-scale combined heat and power (CHP) units.
