Is Sob Rock A Good Album? || My Review and Reaction

Описание: Is Sob Rock a good album? In today's video I talk about John Mayer's latest 80's inspired album Sob Rock. Do I like it? Why is it so polarizing in the Guitar community and amongst John Mayer fans?

Concept albums like Sob Rock can be very hit and miss. Some concept albums are executed so well whereas others can be seen as gimmicky. So how does Sob Rock compare with its quintessential 80's sound, inspired by all of John's heroes during that decade; Think Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Don Henley to name but a few.

There are plenty of nods to these greats throughout this album, from guitar tones, to chord progressions/arrangemnts, it's all handled really tastefully and still sounds like a 'John Mayer' album as opposed to do an Eric Clapton such as 'August' performed by John Mayer.

80's music can easily sound cliched, especially lyrically and there are definitely some cliche topics around love and heartbreak in some of these songs but I believe this is John Mayer remaining true to the concept and making his lyrics accessible, relatable and in true Sob Rock style, nostalgic. Any cliches are counteracted with catchy melodies. The melodies on this album are some of my favourites - full of hooks.
