The story of the Imperial Japanese Navy heavy cruiser Chōkai is a gripping tale of triumph and tragedy from the Pacific War. Born from the restrictive naval treaties of the 1920s, Chōkai was designed as the ultimate predator—a "treaty cruiser" built for one purpose: to dominate the brutal night battles of the Pacific. Armed with heavy guns and the legendary Type 93 "Long Lance" torpedo, she was arguably the most powerful heavy cruiser in the world at the start of WWII.
This documentary explores her entire career, from her revolutionary design to her finest hour as the flagship at the Battle of Savo Island, where she led a small Japanese force that inflicted the worst blue-water defeat in the history of the United States Navy. We then follow Chōkai through the brutal attritional campaigns of Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands, before she sails into the heart of the largest naval battle in history: the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
Witness her final, desperate charge during the legendary Battle off Samar, where she hunts American escort carriers, only to be undone by a one-in-a-million shot that turns her greatest weapon against her. This is the story of a perfect victory, a long war, and a tragic, ironic end that left no survivors.
