The South Luangwa Safari

Often referred to as one of the finest National Parks in Africa, Zambia’s South Luangwa National park is truly is a must do on safari enthusiast’s list. We spent a wonderful week along side the Luangwa river searching for many of its charismatic animals. It is a destination know for its excellent leopard viewing, and we confirmed that sentiment by seeing 8 different leopards, including a young female catch a mongoose right in front of us! Equally famous in South Luangwa, are its many packs of wild dogs. These endlessly energetic dogs are hard to find, and even harder to keep up with, but when you find them, it is worth all the effort!
When the weather gets nice and warm, the river becomes a magnet, bringing all the different animals together, so there is platy of interaction to see. The animals most affected by the heat, are the hippos, which gather in large numbers, and often lash out at each other as they figure out the tight housing situation. South Luangwa also has a healthy population of lions, and we found lions on everyday of the safari. The real highlight, however, was finding a female lion with very young cubs. Luckily for us, her den site was right net to the road, so we got some quality time with the young family.
South Luangwa is a birding paradise, with hundreds of species of birds waiting to be discovered. In amongst our many bird sightings, we spent an incredible afternoon at the nesting site of many beautiful southern carmine bee eaters as they took to the sky, banked and dived back down again. They are fast moving so the photography is tricky, but when you get it right the results speak for themselves.
Comfortably nestled in amongst the natural vegetation, our camp provided us with a fantastic base from which to explore this amazing place. The service was always friendly, confirming Zambia as one the friendliest countries to visit, and the food was delicious!
