Hygiene refers to the practices that help maintain cleanliness and promote health by preventing the spread of disease. In Nursing Foundation–II, Unit 4 focuses on the importance of personal, environmental, and hospital hygiene in maintaining physical and mental well-being of individuals and communities.
Personal hygiene includes care of skin, hair, nails, mouth, eyes, ears, and perineal area. Proper personal hygiene helps prevent infections, improves comfort, enhances self-esteem, and promotes overall health. Daily bathing, hand washing, oral care, nail care, and clean clothing are essential components.
Environmental hygiene involves maintaining cleanliness of surroundings such as living areas, hospital wards, water supply, food, and waste disposal. A clean environment reduces the risk of communicable diseases and supports recovery in sick patients.
In hospitals, hygienic practices like hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper cleaning of patient units, and safe waste management are crucial to prevent hospital-acquired infections (HAIs).
Role of the nurse includes assisting patients with hygienic care, educating patients and families about hygiene practices, maintaining a clean and safe environment, and following standard precautions.
Thus, hygiene is a fundamental aspect of nursing care that promotes health, prevents disease, and ensures patient comfort and dignity.
