Bird Pupils - Unique Bird Eyes

First, parrots, who use the voluntary control they have over their pupil size to communicate with other birds. This is probably not unique, but they are very good at it. If you ever see a parrot with a very large or very small pupil, it might be trying to communicate something.

Second, an actually unique pupil in the African Skimmer, who has a vertical slit pupil. The current theory about this pupil shape is that it gives the African Skimmer a large range between daytime bright sunlight hunting and nighttime dim moonlight hunting. I have a personal theory as well, which is that the vertical slit will someday be found to have some kind of effect like polarizing sunglasses. They hunt so close to the water surface that I can imagine a vertical polarizing slit to be super useful. But that is my guess, not anything from research.

Third, the unique pupil of a King Penguin. It's a square! King Penguins probably use this to pre-adapt their eyes for underwater fish hunting. The range between their fully open pupils and fully closed pupils is 300x, which blows the rest of us vertebrates out of the water. Humans have a range of about 16x.

These are interesting facts in their own right, but the bigger lesson to learn is that when you see an an animal with a unique feature it's probably worth investigating. It will teach you something new about the rest of Life.
