Physical Divisions of Jharkhand

Jharkhand lies mainly on the Chota Nagpur Plateau and can be divided into three major physical divisions:

Chota Nagpur Plateau

Covers most of Jharkhand.

Composed of ancient crystalline rocks (granite and gneiss).

Characterized by undulating plateau, hills, valleys, and waterfalls.

Important plateaus: Ranchi Plateau, Hazaribagh Plateau, and Kodarma Plateau.

Rich in minerals like coal, iron ore, mica, and bauxite.

Rajmahal Hills

Located in the northeastern part of Jharkhand.

Made of volcanic basaltic rocks.

Form a distinct hilly region along the Ganga valley.

Important for stone quarrying.

Ganga Plain (Northern Plains)

Found in the northern fringe of Jharkhand.

Consists of fertile alluvial soil.

Suitable for agriculture, especially rice and wheat cultivation.

Physiography of Jharkhand

Jharkhand has a rugged and uneven topography.

Average elevation ranges from 300 to 700 meters above sea level.

Rivers like Damodar, Subarnarekha, Barakar, and Koel originate from the plateau.

Presence of steep slopes and hard rocks leads to waterfalls such as Hundru and Dassam.

The region has thin soils on uplands and fertile soils in valleys.
