Originally from the Gower myself, it was a little embarrassing that I'd never played here at the Gower Golf club until now, 30 years since it opened in the mid 1990's. So with the quest to play and film as many courses as I can in full swing, it was only right that I should return "home" and play here.

The Gower Golf Club is located between Gowerton and Three Crosses, up in the North Gower hills overlooking the Loughor estuary. Due to its situation, it is an undulating course on reasonably hilly ground but this allows it to present wonderful views North over much of the front nine, out over the estuary and towards the Brecon Beacons, and also on a few holes towards the sea with views out to Swansea Bay.

The course offers a good test with the lie of the land presenting challenges both with stance position and club selection, and when I played here the wind was also a major factor with a stiff breeze coming into play. The fairways were in very good condition being nice and firm and offering good lies. The greens were of a decent standard being a consistent pace throughout but with a few blemishes here and there. Overall they were very easy to play on though and not a distraction.

I felt the course was a course of two halves, with these split by the main feature. The first 7 holes are a good introduction and offer great views but were a little more exposed with the wind. The 8th hole is the start of Gower's "Amen Corner" with this super par 5 kicking things off. A blind drive down over a hill crest to reveal the green way down at the bottom of the hill, protected by water. A super hole indeed. A tricky par 3 follows with the first sign of significant mature trees that is a feature of the courses defence on many of the back 9 holes. The tricky 10th is another par 5 that requires good placement with a stream cutting across the fairway if you are to try and attack the pin. The 11th closes this section, another pretty par 3, shooting towards the green from the tee position in the woods. The remaining holes then work their way back up and down the hills, towards the clubhouse with several of them featuring mature trees to guard the greens.

Green fees here are good value and the club had a friendly vibe from the people that I spoke to. The road access is a little tricky with a few narrow lanes and hills to navigate, but I've been to many more difficult venues! Overall a great club to come and play a visit with some super views and memorable holes, just prepare yourself for a few hilly walks (or hire a buggy!).
