Potatoes have been on our planet for more than ten thousand years. With origins in Peru and Northern Bolivia, potatoes were domesticated by the Native Americans. It's a perennial plant in the nightshade family. Other family members include tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and tomatillos.

Did you know?

It was way back in 2500 BC that the earliest archeologically verified tuber remains were found at the coastal site of Ancon, which is present day Peru. The most widely cultivated variety is indigenous to the Chilean archipelago and has been cultivated by the locals since before the Spanish conquest.

During the 16th Century, the Spanish took the potato home with them, introducing it to all of Europe.

In 1788, the French introduced Gratin Dauphinois, or potatoes au gratin. The chefs combined sliced potatoes and milk or cream. It was served at a dinner party given by the Duke of Clarmont for his municipal officials.

It was way back in 1952 that Hasbro introduced Mr. Potato Head, an iconic American toy that consists of a plastic potato and attachable plastic part to make a face. It was the first toy to ever be advertised on television.
