Today we’re looking at another form, and how to write them! Before we get started I need to get a bit of the boring stuff out of the way. Firstly, I may be a little quiet over the coming weeks. I will of course do everything in my power to get videos out every tuesday, like I have with this one but I just want to make you all aware that I’m currently in the process of buying a house and it’s taking up a lot of my time, as well as continuing to launch my project the poetry cove. Which leads me on nicely to my second piece of admin, regarding this video. Because I’m rushed for time, I’ve not been able to do the research that I normally do for this videos, so I apologise if it is all over the place and the graphics aren’t what they should be! With that being said, let’s dive into the video!

So, you want to write a reverse poem! I said in my villanelle video that they are the hardest form of poetry, but I tell you something… These are in my opinion, much harder. But worry not dear friends, if you watch this video until the end, you’ll have the tools to go forth and write your very own to wow your friends, family and contemporaries!

So what is a reverse poem? A reverse poem is a piece that can be read from top to bottom as well as from bottom to top. Now, normally and I think most powerfully, the too poems of very opposite, and if at times very conflicting meanings. Body image reverse poems are incredibly popular, and always very moving. Political Reverse Poems are always very good too. But I’m not here to tell you what your poem should be about, just how to write them, so let’s break it down.

After you’ve decided what your poem is going to convey, the next thing to decide is whether or not the down poem is going to be the negative or the positive side to your work. Now a quick side note, this is just common practice but as I always say, rules are made to be broken, and the can both be negative or positive poems… though I do tend to find negative to positive has more of an impact on me personally.

So lets say you going to do negative to positive. A great way to do this is have your first line be a positive statement, and the last line have a negative connotation. I’m going to speed through the structure so you have all your notes together, then I’ll leave you with some examples so you can see how it is done.

Now lets talk about the main body of the poem. A good thing to keep in mind to make your life easier, is following on from your opening line you want an emotionally neutral sentence that starts with a conjunction, such as the words: so, and, because etc. Then, you alternate… so on the other said of your neutral line is a positive… again, if you started negative, you have a neutral, then a positive… then followed by a neutral, and back to negative. Now you have the bare minimum knowledge to take on this new poetry form. Remember, these are just the basic bones and if you want to play around with the structure, of course you have every right to! I’m going to read you two examples before I leave you with my final thoughts:
