Sky News Washington Correspondent Annelise Nielsen says a case before the US Supreme Court on whether race-based college admissions programs are unlawful will have “really serious ramifications” if it goes through.
“It also turns to a broader issue in the United States about how they can push ahead opportunities for people of colour when they haven’t had those opportunities before,” she told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
Ms Nielsen said there are “some serious systemic issues” in the US university system, with over $1.3 trillion of student debt in the nation.
“It kind of goes back to this whole argument about what is higher education for, if not to be the most academically competitive forum and not to help you get a job afterwards?
“If you’re loading these kids up with debt and they didn’t have the grades to be in an academically competitive position in the first place, how are they ever going to manage that?”
