Distance Handling 101 - Foundation Skills: Episode 11 - Progressing the Two Bowl Game with Distance

Описание: In this episode: We are progressing the two bowl game to build challenge and independence. Our dogs are reliably going between the two bowls with an obstacle between them. The next stage is to transfer the value for going between the two bowls to the obstacle.

We are going to add distance and test the dog's understanding of the game by giving them the option of making a mistake. When we add distance from the obstacle (in this case a cone) we are opening up the possibility of them skipping the part where they go around the cone to reach the bowls.

Now they can simply cut across to go between the bowls. That is not what we want to happen but by giving the dog the option to make a mistake we help them to understand what we do want. It is all part of the trial and error process of learning.

As with all my training, we will not be punishing the dog for making a mistake, we will just not be rewarding the incorrect behaviour. If we progress gradually enough the dog will learn what results in a reward and what doesn't, reinforcing the correct behaviour and growing their confidence and independence.

I try to avoid using even a light-hearted 'oops' or 'oh dear' when they make a mistake. I just remain silent and wait for them to think about what worked and what didn't.

This is a valuable element of learning that all animals use (including humans) and encourages a deeper level of understanding without anxiety about failures.

Dog agility is a fast growing sport involving the dog negotiating a series of obstacles. Traditionally, handlers have endeavoured to run with their dogs around a course. However, with courses becoming bigger, it is increasingly vital to teach distance handling for dog agility. While some handlers may have physical limitations that mean they cannot run with their dogs, even handlers that are fit and able will need distance handling skills. These skills include - obstacle independence - ability to respond to verbal as well as physical cues - great drive and focus forward However, distance handling can often seem daunting to those who have never tried it. In this new series, I am going to explore the foundations for great distance handling. You will learn the key training techniques, exercises to build drive and independence and develop your skills as a distance handler.

About me! I am a force free dog trainer living in the United Kingdom. I have trained with a variety of dogs and currently own Shelties and working cockers or cocker crosses. I have competed in agility since 2013 and have qualified for various regional and national finals.
