3 1 How Mercy Relates

To understand mercy, compare it to three attributes: FORGIVENESS, LOVE, GRACE. First: mercy has much in common with forgiveness, though distinct. God's forgiveness of sins FLOWS FROM His mercy. But mercy is GREATER than forgiveness — God is merciful even when we don't sin, just as we can be merciful to those who never wronged us. God's mercy doesn't just forgive transgression — it reaches ALL our weaknesses and needs. Second: just as forgiveness flows from mercy, mercy flows from LOVE. Ephesians 2:4-5: 'God, being rich in mercy, because of His GREAT LOVE with which He loved us, even when dead in transgressions, made us alive with Christ.' Love is greater than mercy — can manifest even when no wrong to forgive or need to meet. Third: mercy is related to GRACE, which flows from love. Grace and mercy have closest possible relationship, yet are different. Mercy deals with CONSEQUENCE of sin; grace deals with SIN ITSELF. Mercy offers RELIEF from punishment; grace offers PARDON for crime. Look at Good Samaritan: held no animosity (love), bound wounds (mercy), took to inn and cared (grace). Such is mercy working with forgiveness, love, and grace.
