The history of the Philippine national anthem, "Lupang Hinirang" ("Chosen Land"), is a story of evolution that reflects the country's journey toward independence and national identity.
In June 1898, as the Philippines prepared to declare its independence from Spain, President Emilio Aguinaldo commissioned a new national march to replace an earlier, unsatisfactory one.
Julián Felipe was tasked with the composition. He created an instrumental march titled "Marcha Filipina-Magdalo."
For over a year, the anthem was an instrumental piece. In August 1899, a young poet and soldier named José Palma wrote a poem in Spanish titled "Filipinas" ("Philippines").
The poem, which expressed the patriotism and fighting spirit of the Filipino people, was published in the newspaper La Independencia on September 3, 1899. It was subsequently set to the music of the "Marcha Nacional Filipina," giving the anthem its first lyrics.
During the American colonial period, the anthem was initially banned by the Flag Act of 1907, which prohibited the public display of emblems from the Philippine Revolution.
The law was repealed in 1919, and the anthem regained its status. The American government then decided to translate the anthem from Spanish to English.
A popular English version, known as the "Philippine Hymn," was written by Senator Camilo Osías and an American, Mary A. Lane. This version was officially legalized in 1938.
In the 1940s, with the growing movement to establish a national language, several Tagalog translations began to emerge. The official Filipino version, "Lupang Hinirang," was adopted in 1956 during the presidency of Ramon Magsaysay. Minor revisions were made in the 1960s to perfect the lyrics.
Finally, in 1998, the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines (Republic Act No. 8491) officially codified the current "Lupang Hinirang" lyrics and mandated that the anthem must always be performed in the Filipino version.
