The Peter and Paul Fortress is a historic and architectural landmark in Saint Petersburg, where the city's history began. It was founded on May 27 (May 16 Old Style), 1703, by order of Peter the Great on Zayachy (Hare) Island. This date is considered the official founding day of Saint Petersburg.
The fortress was originally built to defend against a possible Swedish attack during the Great Northern War. However, no battles occurred there, and the fortress soon took on other roles.
It is the oldest building in Saint Petersburg.
