Keyboard Concerto No.1 in D Minor, BWV 1052 (Allegro, First Movement)
Considered one of his best concertos, this Concerto in D Minor most likely was written for violin and then transcribed later for harpsichord. The first movement, Allegro, is fast and furious yet still has gentle reprieve dispersed throughout. There is little down time for the primo piano player. In fact, one of the biggest "rests" for the pianist occurs at 4:38 with a single quarter note rest! For this reason and Bach's skillful mastery of composition, unlike many concertos, it can stand alone as a solo even without an orchestra reduction. Although, one would have to argue that it is not complete without the orchestra.
Bach used this concerto in another one of his works as well. He used the opening of the first movement for the introduction of his cantata, Cantata 'Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal in das Reich Gottes eingehen," a sign that Bach thought highly of this concerto.
