The latest generation Lexus ES medium sedan was launched in SA during 2019, although it no longer fits the medium description having grown in size, luxury and overall comfort.
The ES range was originally the "budget" offering in the local range but has moved upmarket to fill the gap now that the GS versions are no longer offered in this market.
Having recently tested the electric alternative from another brand, I am convinced that the hybid solution is perfect for local conditions. No range anxiety, no waiting for sufficient infrastructure, but sadly still carrying a price disadvantage without government subsidies that are applicable in many other countries.
The Lexus approach to hybrid engineering is to utilise the existing engine. In this case a 2.5L 4 cylinder petrol motor and supplement with added hybrid power. 160kW and 221+e power create a sedan that performs in all conditions. From the extra quick electric pull-off and limited electric only range, commuting duty is covered in almost eerie silence and virtually no fuel consumed. The CVT gearshift is smooth and seamless and feels perfectly suited to the job in every circumstance.
While cruising, it becomes addictive to watch for the green "EV" light on the dash to show that you are now cruising with minimal petrol and enjoying the hybid assistance.
What does all the above mean in the real world though? Quite simply it shows in an overall fuel consumption figure of 5.2L/ 100km over an entire weeks driving in all conditions. From traffic gridlock to freeway cruising. All this in a sedan with strech-out space and a large boot for the whole family.
The interior is standard Lexus fare which means top quality trim and fittings throughout, even if the infotainment controller system remains somewhat clumsy to operate. I was a bit surprised to find that navigation is not standard on this model, but am finally getting used to Android Auto and this worked easily and simply.
Standard safety features include 10 airbags in addition to all the other features that you would expect in this regard.
The current list price of the test vehicle is R 774 300 including a 7 year/ 105 000km Maintenance plan
