Hi Everyone!
This week's video documents the rise of the Class 800/801/802.
Watch the video to see these trains in action, and read the description for the information about these trains.
Train Operating Companies (T.O.C.'s) Are:
Great Western Railway (G.W.R.)
London North Eastern Railway (L.N.E.R.)
TransPennine Express (T.P.E.)
It is worth noting that Hull Trains also operate the I.E.T. and they use the 802 to cater for their demand. However, a lack of footage means that they are not featured in this video.
Train Information
The Class 800/801/802 is a new type of Intercity Express Trains, designed primarily to replace older Intercity Express Trains, such as the H.S.T. and Intercity 225. However, these new I.E.T.s are very different in terms of power sources.
When the overhead wires are available, the I.E.T will almost certainly be making the most of the 25000V it has. However, when the overhead power line come to an end, they can switch over to their diesel mode, which means that these trains can operate anywhere in the country, greatly appealing to companies who have routes mixed with power lines for one part, and no power lines for another.
These trains have been in the making since 2014, and the first one of these was delivered to Great Western Railway on 16th October 2017.
These trains are certified for 140mph, but due to no in-cab signalling, they are restricted to 125mph. Even so, their acceleration is extremely brisk, especially when considering that these can weigh as much as 500 tonnes when laden! This acceleration also appeals to companies, as the Intercity 125 and 225 are slower off the mark.
However, this is not all good news. The seats have come under criticism, as many people think they are less comfortable than their predecessors. In addition to this, their build quality is not as up t scratch as it should be. In November 2019, 800 109 collided head on with 43 300, at this point still an L.N.E.R. H.S.T. Thankfully, it was a low speed collision, and no-one was hurt. Startlingly though, the 800 came off a lot worse than the H.S.T, and 3 carriages actually derailed. The H.S.T. was 40 years older, and it alarms me to think of what could happen if the collision speed was 10 times higher on the mainline. More recently, the I.E.T. has had to have undergo a full investigation, as cracks were found in on their exterior. This has hugely impacted the companies, and many are still operating a reduced timetable.
