in this video, Matthew King discusses Holst's famous orchestral Suite, 'The Planets'. He discusses the origins of the work, its early performances, and the diversity of critical responses to it. Matthew King plays and discusses the prophetic first movement 'Mars the Bringer of War' (composed in the cataclysmic year of 1914) and revealing some of the fascinating harmonic, rhythmic and structural innovations in this remarkable music.

The video contains several excerpts from a 2015 performance of Holst's The Planets with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Elysian Singers (Women's Voices) conducted by Susanna Mälkki at the Proms (Royal Albert Hall, London).

The video also contains excerpts from Schoenberg's 5 Orchestral Pieces Op. 16, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Robert Craft, and Elgar's Falstaff, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras.
