He withstood the most difficult temptation at the most vulnerable moments in his life and didn't give in. Our Heavenly Father credits His victory to us. He brought home the gold for s. 1. Read the story of the temptation of Christ again as it is found in Matthew 4:1-11. Why might we call this the Spiritual Olympics of the Universe?
2. Why did Jesus fast for 40 days and 40 nights? Think of the story of Israel in the wilderness?
3. How would fasting for so long make these temptations the "ultimate test"?
4. In the devil's first temptation, what was the temptation for Jesus' heart? Look closely at Jesus' answer from Deuteronomy. (Matthew 4:4)
5. In the devil's second temptation, how did he craftily use Scripture? (Matthew 4:6)
6. What do we learn from Jesus' response about the nature of this temptation?
7. In the devil's third temptation, he tempted Jesus to take the easy way out. Describe what we mean by this?
8. What would be the devastating results if Jesus had ever succumbed to any temptation?
9. In the winter Olympics going on right now, they show people celebrating from the countries whose athletes have won the gold medal. Why are those people celebrating if they didn't actually win the gold themselves?
10. How can we learn from the Olympics to celebrate Christ's temptation during Lent?
11. Name sometimes in life when this story would give special comfort.
12. How might we learn to follow Jesus' example when resisting temptation?
