Vladimir Drozdoff (1882–1960) was a Russian pianist and composer and a student of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakoff. Like Sergei Rachmaninoff, he emigrated from Russia following the October Revolution. Both composers spent their final years in exile in the United States, grappling with the displacement from their Russian homeland. Their music is deeply rooted in the Russian musical tradition, often characterized by melancholy and expressive intensity. After Rachmaninoff’s death in 1943, Drozdoff composed the three-part homage "Au tombeau de Rachmaninoff", the final movement of which, "Psalmodie du printemps", is presented here. Drozdoff composed the first movement on the very day of Rachmaninoff’s passing.
Drozdoff’s work expresses both grief over the loss of a kindred spirit and admiration for his legacy. The Psalmodie combines meditative calm with an undercurrent of longing, showing clear parallels to Rachmaninoff’s profound melodic expression. Like Rachmaninoff, Drozdoff draws on liturgical-inspired moods in this piece. The "Psalmodie du printemps" serves as a quiet elegy, honoring Rachmaninoff’s musical spirit while showcasing Drozdoff’s own artistic voice.
