This video puts two time shifts together to tell more of the story of this corner on Lincoln High Street than I've been able to before. The first time shift is new, the second was posted a long time ago on my original channel.
The bank we know today at 221 High Street was built for the Lincoln and Lindsey Banking Company April in 1893-1894, a conversion by famous Victorian architect William Watkins of existing grocers shop of Messrs Butler and Stanser, and drapers shop of Messrs Hepwortth and Sons. Hepworths is known to have been there in 1885, and you can see it in the first old photo dated c1888. Work was undertaken by contractors M Otter & Co. This involved retaining the second floor, while replacing the ground and first floors. You can see that work ongoing in the second old photo. Named the London City and Midland Bank Ltd in 1913. It was extended and altered by W G Watkins 1923-4 to take in 220 High Street, the front part of the County Arms. This pub was present by 1841 when the publican was Thomas Melton and closed in 1923. Also known as the City Arms. Formerly the Midland Bank before the 1998/9 name change to HSBC. Now I just wish I could find a photo of the County Arms pub!
