​Construction: The construction of the palace was a long process that spanned three generations of the Holkar dynasty. It began in 1886 under Maharaja Tukoji Rao Holkar II, was continued by his son Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar, and was finally completed by his grandson, Maharaja Tukoji Rao Holkar III, in 1926.

​Royal Residence: The palace served as the royal residence of the Holkar rulers until 1978.

​Conversion to Museum: In the 1980s, the palace fell into disrepair. In 1987, it was acquired by the state government and subsequently converted into a museum, which is now maintained by the Department of Archaeology, Archives, and Museums, Madhya Pradesh.
