Dear fellow knitters: please forgive the shakiness of my hands. My apologies. It is due to one of my medications.
This is addendum to my Hexagonal Knitting Series.
In this tutorial, I demonstrate how to draw a perfect hexagon to aid in blocking your tiles after knitting. This will ensure consistency with regard to the size of each hexagon which will aid you in grafting them together. The hexagon I knitted in this series is the “flat” version from the second expansion pack (45 round hexagon). You may use the same technique for constructing a larger 55-round hexagon. The measurements for this hexagon were as follows. Each side of the hexagon as well as each diagonal as measured from pinhole to corner is 6-inches. Subsequently, the hexagon measures 12-inches from point-to-opposite point and 10-3/8-inches from side-to-opposite side.
This method neither involves nor requires mathematics. In essence, you’ll be constructing an equilateral triangle (a triangle with equal sides) and then using that to construct the entire hexagon only using the following materials: paper / scrap paper (8-1/2-inches X 11-inches), ruler, pen, scissors, T-pins (3 to 4), blocking mats (4 arranged in a 2 X 2 configuration). (I purchased a bag of 28 from Wal-Mart for around $15 (US): https://www.walmart.com/ip/Spark-Crea.... I made the decision to draw directly on my blocking mat. If you do not wish to draw on your mats because you will be using them for blocking other projects, you may construct your hexagon on mylar paper which is slightly rigid as well as glossy and should hold up with moisture. I would avoid regular paper or cardboard as the moisture from your blocked hexagon may ultimately ruin them. Your local or favorite online craft store should have a selection of this type of paper. It is considered a “specialty” paper. Here is a link for mylar paper at Michael’s Craft Store: https://www.michaels.com/grafix-clear....
I decided to make this video series to aid knitters in hexagonal knitting – specifically for knitting the Persian Dreams blanket. You may find Jenise Hope’s BEAUTIFUL pattern at the following links: Fingering weight: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr.... Worsted weight: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr.... Expansion Pack for original pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr.... Expansion Pack for “flat hexagons: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr.... The latter two patterns are for fingering weight. She does have expansion packs for her worsted weight designs and may be found in the description section for the listed expansion packs above.
Skills Required: Knitting, knitting in the round, Fair Isle / stranded knitting.
With regard to the materials needed for this project, please see the instructions in the pattern I have listed above. Optional / recommended materials: 3 circular needles in the following manufacturer, size and lengths: Knitter’s Pride Dreamz, US 2 (2.75mm) in 24-, 40- and 47-inches. A stitch marker. This pattern may also be knitted using double point needles (dpns). The wool I am using in my videos is from Knit Picks’ palette (Navy) and chroma (colorways vary) in fingering weight.
