Sharad Purnima also known as Kojagiri Purnima marks the commencing of Sharad ritu (the harvest season), one of the six ritus according to the Hindu calendar. The auspicious full moon day is considered to be divine. The devotees offer their prayers to Goddess Laxmi and even observe fast for the whole day. This festival is celebrated in different parts of the country in different ways but with the same devotion towards Goddess Laxmi.

As according to many beliefs and science also, since moon is supposed to be closest to the earth on this day, this night's the moon rays are said to have curative properties. In Maharashtra, the tradition is to prepare masala milk -milk full of sugar, dry fruits like cashewnuts, almonds, pistachios and spices like cardamom, saffron and nutmeg. This is kept in the open, under the moonlight for couple of hours and then consumed later by all who have gathered for the celebration. Instead of masala milk, some choose to make kheer or mixed with flattened rice or 'poha' is another popular sweetmeat. In fact, the colour white pervades the festival given its intrinsic connection with the moon and its quiet, soothing charm.

Being the brightest moonlight night of the year, Kojagiri naturally holds appeal for lovers and literatteurs. Therefore the night is celebrated as the night of love where couples come out at night to express their love on full moon night. According to the legendary `Raasleela' where Lord Krishna multiplied his form and danced with Radha and several gopis all at once, making each of them believe that the real Krishna was with her was performed this night. Even the Marathi bhavgeet `Chandanyat Phirtana Majha Dharlas Haat', the feeling of lovers nicely expressed by lyricist Suresh Bhatt, that gave the jitters to singer Asha Bhosle, especially since her brother Hridaynath was leading her through the composition, draws its imagery from Kojagiri Purnima.
