Hello everyone,
I’m Dr. Arnab Ghosh, Counseling Psychologist.
A very common question parents ask me these days is—
“Doctor, Gen Z kids ke samlabo ki kore?”
Let me be very clear from the beginning—
👉 Gen Z kids are not “bad” kids.
👉 They are different kids, growing up in a very different world.
🧠 First, understand Gen Z
Gen Z children are:
Born into technology, not introduced to it
Emotionally sensitive but mentally overloaded
They question authority, not because they are disobedient, but because they want logic and respect
If they feel unheard, they rebel.
If they feel understood, they cooperate.
🚫 What parents should NOT do
From my clinical experience, these things create maximum damage:
Constant comparison
Shaming or ridiculing emotions
Only scolding, no listening
Using fear as discipline
Fear may create silence—but silence is not mental health.
✅ What actually works
1️⃣ Listen without interrupting
Many parents listen only to reply, not to understand.
Sometimes your child doesn’t need advice—they need validation.
A simple line like:
“আমি বুঝতে পারছি এটা তোমার জন্য কঠিন”
can completely change the conversation.
2️⃣ Discipline with explanation, not domination
Instead of saying:
“মোবাইল বন্ধ কর”
Try saying:
“বেশি স্ক্রিন টাইমে তোমার ঘুম আর মুড দুটোই নষ্ট হয়—চলো আমরা একসাথে একটা নিয়ম বানাই”
Gen Z respects clarity, not control.
3️⃣ Be emotionally available
Children often open up:
Late at night
During travel
At unexpected moments
If you keep postponing these conversations, they stop trying.
4️⃣ Talk openly about mental health
Anxiety, stress, loneliness, identity confusion—
these are very real for Gen Z kids.
Seeking counseling or therapy is not weakness.
It is emotional hygiene—just like physical health checkups.
⚖️ Remember: Discipline is not punishment
Healthy discipline is:
Calm
Consistent
Consequence-based
Anger-based parenting only teaches no fear, not responsibility.
🌱 The golden rule of Gen Z parenting
Connection before correction.
If the relationship is strong, guidance works.
If the relationship is broken, rules don’t.
🎯 Closing
Gen Z kids don’t need stricter parents.
They need emotionally intelligent adults.
If you’re struggling as a parent, remember—
asking for help is the first step toward healing, not failure.
Thank you for watching.
This is Dr. Arnab Ghosh.
