Formal charge
hypothetical charge on an atom in a molecule assuming equal sharing of bonding electrons, used to find the best Lewis structure, predict reactivity, and understand resonance by assigning charges that sum to the molecule's overall charge, with lower (closer to zero) formal charges indicating more stable structures. It's calculated by subtracting an atom's lone electron count and half its shared electrons from its valence electrons, helping to distinguish resonance forms and identify reactive sites.
