Intersections of Identity: Expression, Exchange, and Hybridity
Dr. Megan Wanttie, Ph.D. in Art Education with a focus in Museum Education, The Ohio State University
Manager of Children and Family Programs, Columbus Museum of Art
Critical posthuman education applied to art museum spaces can provide an opportunity for museums to re-imagine the processes that construct our definitions of what art, artists, viewers, and participants can be. Humanism centers the implicit practice of coding certain things, places, and people as less-than-human and therefore lesser than. In contrast, Critical Posthumanism acts as a force of disruption that reaches outward and encompasses a variety of disruptive social theories including Critical Race Theory, Queer Theory, and Critical Disability Studies. In this lecture, we will sketch out the theoretical framework of Critical Posthumanism and explore the ways that museum practice can transform alongside evolving epistemologies and ontologies relevant to our evolving world.
