🌟 Visiting Aberdeen – A few days exploring the Granite City 🌟
Aberdeen, known as the “Granite City” for its striking silver-grey buildings, is a vibrant mix of historic charm and coastal beauty. Here’s how we spent our time exploring some of its most iconic sights:
🏫 University of Aberdeen – King’s College
We started our visit at the University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495. The highlight is King’s College Chapel, with its stunning medieval crown tower – one of the finest examples of late Gothic architecture in Scotland. The campus is full of character, and wandering through the cobbled lanes feels like stepping back in time.
⛪ St Machar’s Cathedral
A short stroll north took us to St Machar’s Cathedral, a majestic 12th-century church nestled in Old Aberdeen. With its twin spires and ornate heraldic ceiling, it’s a peaceful place steeped in history – and a reminder of Aberdeen’s deep ecclesiastical roots.
🌉 Brig o’ Balgownie
We had a lovely walk to the Brig o’ Balgownie, an ancient stone bridge dating back to the 13th century. Spanning the River Don, this single-arch bridge is beautifully preserved and surrounded by lush greenery – perfect for photos and a quiet moment by the water.
🏘️ Fittie (Footdee)
A hidden gem!!! We headed toward the coast to visit Footdee, affectionately known as Fittie. This former fishing village at the harbour’s edge is full of quirky cottages and colourful sheds. It’s a beautiful place that showcases Aberdeen’s maritime heritage and community spirit.
🌳 Duthie Park & David Welch Winter Gardens
A fabulous visit to Duthie Park, a tranquil green space ideal for unwinding. The David Welch Winter Gardens, one of Europe’s largest indoor gardens, was a highlight – with tropical palms, cacti, and even a talking cactus (yes, really!). A perfect contrast to the city’s granite grandeur.
☕ Final Thoughts
Whether you’re into history, nature, or coastal charm, Aberdeen offers a little bit of everything. It’s a compact city that’s easy to explore on foot or by bike, with plenty of cosy cafes and friendly faces along the way.
