What is Kwanzaa? What do the seven candles of the Kinara mean?
In this short, 60-second visual explainer video, we explore Kwanzaa through the symbolism of the Kinara, the candleholder that represents the heart of the celebration.
Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday observed from December 26 to January 1, created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga. It draws inspiration from African harvest festivals and was designed to help people of African descent reconnect with shared values, history, and community after centuries of displacement.
At the center of Kwanzaa is the Kinara, which holds seven candles, each representing one of the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles):
Umoja (Unity)
Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
Nia (Purpose)
Kuumba (Creativity)
Imani (Faith)
This video presents the Kinara in 60 seconds, using visual storytelling to show how these principles apply not only to family and community life, but also to modern identity, confidence, and purpose.
Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday. It can be celebrated alongside Christmas, Hanukkah, or other traditions, and focuses on culture, values, and reflection rather than commercialism.
