Segregated Sacrifice: Black Soldiers Fought WW2 in a Separate, Unequal Army

During World War II, the U.S. Army remained fully segregated — Black soldiers trained, lived, ate, and fought in separate “colored” units with no mixing alongside white troops. Most were stuck in labor roles (driving trucks, digging graves, loading supplies) far from combat. They faced inferior food, housing, and equipment. Combat opportunities were rare until desperate manpower shortages in late 1944. Even after victory, many Black veterans were denied the GI Bill benefits and opportunities white soldiers received. A painful contradiction in the fight for “freedom.”
