Can we use robots to find scallops?

Together with the University of Canterbury and Ministry for Primary Industries Fisheries NZ, NIWA New Zealand has been working to develop a non-invasive method of surveying scallop populations.

This is all made possible with the use of an underwater drone, some NIWA divers and some very clever computer learning.

The NIWA dive team validate how many scallops are on the seabed, whilst the computer looks at imagery to also detect scallops on the seabed. The two methods are used in tandem to train the artificial intelligence. 🧠

Developing this technology will allow researchers to gather data over larger areas and improve their understanding of scallop populations, associated organisms and supporting habitats.
