Teaching the Rollback - Part 2 (Working Cattle)

Описание: In Part 2 of our series on rollbacks, we put our rollback practice to the test while working a couple of calves in the arena. Joining me once again is my wife, DeeDee.

Exercise 1: Building Confidence
The objective of this first exercise is simply to introduce the horse to the concept of cattle, and help him gain confidence in his ability to move them around. Pressure toward the cow's tail will drive him forward, and pressure toward the eyes will act as brakes. When working with a hot horse, sometimes it is helpful to have a quieter, more experienced horse leading the way. When building confidence, just push the cattle around down the fence, concentrating on keeping the horse's gaze on the cows. Slow and steady is the name of the game. Use the rollback to change direction while keeping the horse's eye on the cattle.

Exercise 2: Working a Single Cow
To step up the level of difficulty, you can single out one calf, sorting him out, then bringing him back. When I work cattle, I like to work in square corners and straight lines. You have the ability to maneuver that way with a rollback. It's important to never get sucked into following his tail because he'll get away from you every time. Keep the horse's eye on the calf, and use the rollback to stay with him and turn him.

Boldness
Our horses always need leadership from us, but this is especially true when working cattle. Strong leadership requires boldness. It requires us to be courageous in the face of fear or difficulty. Have a little boldness, and your horsemanship will go to the next level.
