Thick legs = medical condition?!
How to Tell the Difference 👀🦵
Lipedema vs. Lymphedema vs. Cellulite—
🔸 Lipedema:
What it is: A chronic condition causing painful, symmetrical fat buildup—mostly in the hips, thighs, and legs (often sparing the feet).
What it looks like: Column-like legs, easy bruising, and skin that feels rubbery or nodular. Feet are usually not swollen.
Clue: Look for a sharp “cuff” at the ankles where the swelling stops. 💥
🔸 Lymphedema:
What it is: Swelling due to a blockage in the lymphatic system. Can be from cancer, surgery, or be genetic.
What it looks like: One leg (or arm) is more swollen than the other. The skin may feel firm, and the feet/toes are often involved.
Clue: Look for “stemmer’s sign”—a thickened skin fold at the base of the toes. 🦶
🔸 Cellulite:
What it is: Totally normal fat beneath the skin, creating a dimpled or “orange peel” texture. Not a disease.
What it looks like: Dimpling, usually on the buttocks or thighs, but no swelling or pain.
Clue: Appears with skin pinching or muscle contraction, but no real bulk to the legs. 🍊
