How do you balance caring for others while being mindful of your own self-care?
This is particularly important for health care workers and other professionals who are often in the frontlines of other people's trauma and distress. Because there is something called vicarious trauma, where other people's trauma may affect us as well.
People who care and have compassion for others, those that take pride and satisfaction from saving others need to be aware of vicarious trauma. Peter and Emi talk about compassion satisfaction, as in the case of lifeguards who are proud of the work that they do and their selflessness, vs compassion fatigue where a psychologist may get burned out from listening to other people's anxiety and depression. It's an important point of view.
So it's important for our mental and emotional health to keep ourselves safe from other people's trauma. When we work in fields like healthcare, social work, or law enforcement that involve caring for other people, we may experience vicarious trauma, which is secondary trauma that comes from being exposed to the trauma of others. Vicarious trauma can cause burnout, compassion fatigue, and other serious mental health problems if it is not dealt with. To protect ourselves from the harmful effects of vicarious trauma, we must learn self-awareness and self-care skills, such as asking for help from colleagues, practicing mindfulness, and getting professional help when we need it. By taking care of ourselves, we can keep helping others in a kind and helpful way.
