If you've been to a pharmacy lately, you might have noticed some changes. In 2023, Ontario expanded the scope of pharmacists in the province to include assessing and prescribing for 19 minor ailments. Need medication for dermatitis, pink eye, UTIs, acne or pink eye? You no longer have to see a doctor at all.

This move aims to take pressure off the health-care system, especially for patients without a family doctor. The government is even considering expanding that list further to include more ailments and offer more vaccines.

But why? And why are some opposed to the move?

Doug Ford's government sees it as an easy way to take pressure off the health-care system, especially for patients without a family doctor. Besides, it argues, similar policies have been in place in other provinces for years.

Detractors worry that the move pushes patients into private businesses such as Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall. They worry those businesses will place profit over patient health. They argue the government should be focused on training more family doctors.
