Ice hockey skate covers help keep the kids feet dry and warm when using the outdoor ice rink.
The skate covers are made from water resistant peplin (the same material they make winter jackets for the exterior) and an inner lining of mountain fleece.
The kids trek through some deep snow to get to the rink ice surface so this keeps the snow out of the ice hockey skate lacers and from getting down the skate boot top. The skate jacket covers also help keep the wind and cold out and the body warmth in so they seem to skate longer.
We've tested these in -20 degree Celsius temperatures and they really make a different for the kids feet. My daughter wore the only one crafted on one foot and her other foot and toes were cold while this one was still toasty warm.
We made two designs. One that is expandable for growing feet (takes a bit more work and velco) and one that fits a set of skates perfectly (joined at the heel with no velcro).
Pros to the fitted pair:
easier to make
a bit warmer
keeps the snow out a bit better
Cons to the fitted pair:
has to be put on before the skate
Since I wanted to make the skate jackets lasted a while, I went with the expandable design, which also has the benefit of it being able to be put on after the skates go on.
